Erik van der Weijde is a Dutch photographer / independent publisher / zine enthusiast. He tackles a different very clearly defined topic in each typology type zine and book he produces to very high lo-fi production standards by the looks of it. The new zine he’s got out, Foto.Zine Nr.3, is available on his website. It concentrates on the themes of VW accidents, handguns, internet butts and palm trees, each in a separate zine that come together in a package. Other topics van der Weijde has dealt with include Berlin lamp posts designed by Albert Speer, German houses built between 33-45, night shots on a specific Rotterdam street taken over the course of a year and so on. There’s also quite a few Brazilian themes. Not sure what it all means, but it’s pleasing to look at. It gives the impression of someone passionate about the world around him, so much so that he embarks on a new project at whim, with full understanding of, yet not particularly bothered by the fact that it’ll remain incomplete in the sense of being a typology, like that of the Nazi era German houses or the VW accidents or women on Avenida Paulista. The work also uses a lot of found imagery and collaborative methods, making it impossible to guarantee that some strict parameters implemented on a typical typological project were followed, yet the body of work as a whole manages to look nice and uniform in terms of over all feel.
