So Jussi, where are you at the moment?
I’m just in Tampere, at my parents’ house. I came to visit and ended up staying for a few days. I’ve been skating the Kaukajärvi ramp here, the old warehouse I used to have the vert ramp in, so I’m pretty much at the source of my inspiration right now. And I just learned to do an invert yesterday, so I’m pretty stoked!
Wait, you just learned inverts?
Yeah, I’ve been skating vert for 19 years and I’ve never been able to do a basic mute invert. I landed the first one in my life now, so I feel like a champion.
Who were you skating with?
This friend of mine Turmis. He’s been skating for two years and he just learned inverts two weeks ago. I felt like I’ve taught him so many tricks he almost owed it to me to teach me this one, so here we are.
Any plans for the next few days?
Nothing much, more skating I hope. I’m hurt at the moment, my PCL is snapped in half. So my pace is a bit different right now. I can’t skate street at all and for vert I keep my knees as padded as I can. I try to only do tricks where I know I’m not going to slam on my right side and trying to figure out how to slam the other way. Other than that I try to ride a bike a lot and work out, be a sportsman, hoping to be fine by next autumn. Or else they might operate and in that case I won’t skate for a year. So just going one day at a time.
I take it you don’t look after your injuries with controlled substances these days, like some other skaters might?
Nah, I do the opposite. The exact opposite.
What did you do to your knee?
I hurt it at Hawks ramp, the BoomBoom ramp in Carlsbad. It was in April, I’d just been on the mega ramp for a few weeks and I’m guessing that sort of put quite a lot of pressure on the knee, because what finally snapped the ligament was just a kickflip with out a grab that I bailed on my knee, nothing too big or anything, but it was enough. Maybe I was too tired, or maybe I got careless, because I was still so stoked on the megaramp. I only just started skating a bit again couple of weeks ago. I’m really excited about the possibility of it getting better without an operation. But I’m not sure if it will, it’s the first time I’ve hurt my knee…
I suppose if you skate vert for 19 years, it’s pretty likely to happen at some point?
Suppose so. Occupational hazard, if you can call it that. Not sure if this is an occupation really, I’ve yet to see a payday! (haha)
What are you up to the rest of the day?
Hmm…I might skate a bit more, or I might just go to the summer place, take a sauna.
